Classic scenic route
7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro
A classic Kilimanjaro camping route for climbers who want rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and a better acclimatization rhythm than the 6-day Machame option.
Route overview
Why the 7 Days Machame Route works so well
The 7 Days Machame Route is one of the strongest Kilimanjaro choices for active travelers who want a beautiful, rewarding and serious mountain experience. It is famous for its changing scenery, but the real advantage is the extra Karanga Camp night compared with the shorter 6-day Machame itinerary.
This route is best for climbers who want the classic southern circuit without rushing every stage. You still need to be prepared, because summit night is demanding, but the route gives your body a better chance to adjust before going high.
With Serengeti Wild Tours, the climb is supported by local mountain guides, daily health checks, proper meals, camping crew, airport transfers and hotel accommodation in Moshi before and after the trek.

Day by day
7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary
The program includes arrival support, mountain days, descent and an easy option to continue with safari or Zanzibar after the climb.
Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi
After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Later, your guide will meet you for a climb briefing, equipment check and honest advice on anything you still need before the trek begins.
Moshi to Machame Gate, trek to Machame Camp
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration, porter weighing and final park formalities. The first trekking day climbs through Kilimanjaro’s green montane forest. Overnight at Machame Camp, around 3,100m. Approx. 9 km, 4 to 6 hours.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
The trail leaves the forest and opens into heather and moorland. On a clear day, you begin to feel the scale of Kilimanjaro, with views across the Shira Plateau and back towards Mount Meru. Overnight at Shira Camp, around 3,840m. Approx. 9 km, 4 to 6 hours.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This is one of the most important acclimatization days. You climb high towards Lava Tower, around 4,600m, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. The “walk high, sleep low” profile helps your body adjust. Approx. 15 km, 6 to 7 hours.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the Barranco Wall. It looks intimidating from camp, but your guides will set a calm pace and help you through the steeper sections. After the wall, the trail rolls across ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. Approx. 4 km, 3 to 5 hours.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
You climb gradually into the alpine desert towards Barafu, the base camp for your summit attempt. The walking day is not very long, but the altitude is serious, so you move slowly, eat well and rest early. Overnight at Barafu Camp, around 4,600m. Approx. 4.5 km, 3 to 4 hours.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, you begin the summit push by headlamp. The pace is slow and steady as you climb towards Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After the summit, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp. Approx. 11 to 14 hours total.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, return to Moshi
Your final walk descends through rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out, successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro certificate before driving back to Moshi for a hot shower, dinner and celebration.

Helpful answers before you send your climb request.
