Route overview

6 Days Machame Route overview

The 6 Days Machame Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Kilimanjaro, but it is more demanding than the 7 day version because it removes the extra overnight at Karanga Camp. The route begins in rainforest, crosses the Shira Plateau, climbs high towards Lava Tower, passes Barranco Wall and reaches Barafu before summit night.

This option is best for trekkers who are fit, comfortable with longer hiking days and have limited time. With Serengeti Wild Tours, the climb includes professional mountain crew support, park fees, camping equipment, meals on the mountain, daily safety checks and guidance from local Kilimanjaro guides.

Best for

Who this route is best for

Each Kilimanjaro route suits a different type of traveler. This section helps visitors choose honestly before they enquire.

Fit trekkers with limited time

A good choice if you want the Machame route but cannot spend 7 days on the mountain.

Travelers with hiking experience

Better for guests who already walk, hike or train regularly before the climb.

Couples, friends and solo travelers

Works for private climbs and selected joining group dates when available.

Not ideal for nervous first timers

If altitude worries you, the 7 day Machame, 7 day Lemosho or 8 day Lemosho may be safer choices.

Day by day

6 Days Machame Route itinerary

The itinerary includes arrival support, mountain days, descent and an easy option to continue with safari or Zanzibar after the climb.

Arrival in Tanzania

Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi

You are welcomed at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Your mountain guide will meet you for a climb briefing, equipment check and final preparation before the trek.

Day 1

Moshi to Machame Gate, trek to Machame Camp

Drive to Machame Gate for registration and porter weighing. The first trekking day climbs through lush rainforest to Machame Camp at about 3,100m. Approx. 9 km, 4 to 6 hours.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the forest and continue into heath and moorland. The route opens to wide views across the Shira Plateau and towards Kibo on clear days. Overnight at Shira Camp, about 3,840m. Approx. 9 km, 4 to 6 hours.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

A key acclimatization day. Trek towards Lava Tower at around 4,600m, then descend to Barranco Camp at around 3,960m. This helps your body adjust before the higher camps. Approx. 15 km, 6 to 7 hours.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga

Start with the Barranco Wall, then continue across ridges and valleys through Karanga before climbing towards Barafu Camp. This is a longer day than the 7 day Machame route. Approx. 8 to 10 hours.

Day 5

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp

Around midnight, begin the summit attempt towards Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. After photos and celebration, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp. Approx. 11 to 14 hours total.

Day 6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, return to Moshi

Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate. After park checkout and certificates where applicable, drive back to Moshi for a hot shower, dinner and rest.

Departure or extension

Moshi to airport, safari or Zanzibar

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue with a Tanzania safari, Zanzibar beach stay or a short Moshi day trip.

Safety and acclimatization notes

  • The 6 day Machame route has an important acclimatization profile because you climb high towards Lava Tower and sleep lower at Barranco.
  • Because there is no overnight at Karanga Camp, the move from Barranco to Barafu is longer and requires steady pacing.
  • Our guides check your oxygen level, pulse and general condition daily. Emergency oxygen and a first aid kit are carried by the mountain team.
  • We strongly recommend arriving rested, walking slowly from day one and telling your guide early if you feel unwell.
