Day By Day Itinerary

Clear daily plan for the climb, written in a way clients can understand before they enquire.

Day
1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to Moshi

You are welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Your guide will meet you for a briefing, equipment check and final preparation. This day helps you arrive calmly before the mountain begins.

Day
2

Moshi to Rongai Gate, trek to Simba Camp

Drive to the Rongai side for registration and start the trek through farmland and forest. The first camp is Simba Camp at about 2,625 m. Approx. 6 to 7 km, 3 to 4 hours.

Day
3

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

The trail continues through moorland with wider views towards Kibo and the northern plains. Overnight at Second Cave Camp at about 3,450 m. Approx. 6 km, 3 to 4 hours.

Day
4

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Trek across open moorland towards Kikelewa Camp. The pace stays steady as your guide manages the day for acclimatization. Overnight at about 3,600 m. Approx. 6 km, 3 to 4 hours.

Day
5

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A shorter but steeper day brings you closer to Mawenzi, one of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful areas. The camp sits near Mawenzi Tarn at about 4,330 m. Approx. 4 km, 3 to 4 hours.

Day
6

Acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn

Spend an extra day around Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatization. Your guide may lead a short hike and return to camp, helping your body adjust before moving towards Kibo.

Day
7

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a high alpine desert section with powerful views. Rest early at Kibo Hut, about 4,700 m, before the summit attempt. Approx. 8 km, 5 to 6 hours.

Day
8

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo Hut

Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Climb towards Gilman's Point, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, then descend to Kibo and onward to Horombo Hut. This is the longest and hardest day. Approx. 11 to 14 hours total.

Day
9

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, return to Moshi

Descend through heath and rainforest to Marangu Gate. After park checkout and certificates where applicable, drive back to Moshi for a shower, dinner and rest.

Day
10

Departure, safari or Zanzibar extension

After breakfast, transfer to the airport or continue with a Tanzania safari, Zanzibar beach stay, Materuni Waterfalls, Chemka Hot Springs or another extension.

Safety And Acclimatization Notes

  • The extra acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn makes this version stronger than shorter Rongai options.
  • Your guide checks pace, hydration, appetite and altitude symptoms daily.
  • Pulse oximeter checks are used to help monitor how your body is adjusting.
  • Summit night is long and cold, so warm layers, gloves, headlamp and mental preparation are important.
  • The descent uses Marangu Gate, giving you a different side of the mountain on the way down.

Inclusions

  • Professional mountain guides, cook and mountain crew
  • Kilimanjaro park fees, camping or hut fees and rescue fees as per route arrangement
  • Meals on the mountain and treated drinking water during the climb
