Great Migration Safaris in Tanzania

A Great Migration safari works best when the route starts with your travel month, not with a fixed map. Our team in Tanzania checks the seasonal area, practical camp position and route flow, then helps you choose the number of days that gives your trip the right pace.

Follow the migration by season

Choose by travel month first

The migration does not stay in one place all year. Use your travel month to narrow the region, then choose how many days you want on safari.

Northern river seasonJuly to October | Mara River area and the northern Serengeti migration range.
Ndutu calvingDecember to March | Southern plains, newborn calves and predator country.
Western CorridorMay to July | Grumeti country, riverine habitat and a quieter migration atmosphere.

Then choose the length

How many days make sense for a migration safari?

4 days

Best for a focused Ndutu calving safari when you want to spend most of the trip in the southern migration area.

5 days

A focused migration trip with enough time to reach the key area without adding too many other parks.

6 days

A good balance when you want the migration plus another northern Tanzania highlight such as Tarangire or Ngorongoro.

7 days

Best when you want more time in the migration area and a less hurried route through the northern circuit.

8 days

A comfortable northern migration length when you want more time in Central and Northern Serengeti without making every transfer day feel rushed.

9 days

Best for travellers who want several nights in northern Serengeti and more flexibility to explore different parts of the migration area at an unhurried pace.

Compare migration safaris for your season

After choosing the right season, compare the routes by duration, parks and starting price. We can adjust the camp location when the herds or road conditions make another area more sensible.

Our local recommendation

If the migration is the reason you are travelling, give the key area enough time

You do not need the longest itinerary just because it is longer. Choose the route that protects useful time in the seasonal area you have travelled to see.

River crossing priority

For a road safari, the 7 Day Northern route is our strongest balance: it reaches Kogatende properly and keeps two full northern game-drive days. If you only have six days, the 6 Day route still protects one full day in the north.

Calving-season priority

The 7 Day Ndutu route gives the southern plains the most breathing room before Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro. For a shorter trip, the 5 Day Ndutu route keeps the safari focused without trying to collect too many parks.

Western Corridor priority

The 6 Day Western Corridor route adds Tarangire while still protecting a full day around the Grumeti side. Choose the 5 Day option when the western migration area is the main priority and you want a cleaner, more focused route.

How we plan migration safaris

We plan the migration from the ground up: month, area, camp position, then route

Camp position matters

In Serengeti, two camps can both be called "northern" or "Ndutu" yet sit far apart. We check where the camp is operating for your dates because that affects how quickly your game drive reaches the seasonal migration area.

Your guide needs useful time on the ground

Migration days are better when the route leaves room to respond to conditions instead of forcing a long transfer at a fixed hour. Private safaris give your group more flexibility in how the day is used.

We confirm the route before you pay

If the standard camp is full or a different location is clearly better for your dates, we explain the reason, accommodation and price before you confirm. Nothing is quietly changed after you book.

Questions before choosing

Great Migration safari answers

Which Great Migration safari should I choose?

Choose northern Serengeti for the main Mara River season from July to October, Ndutu for the southern calving season, or the Western Corridor for the westward movement around May to July.

Are these private or joining safaris?

Every migration itinerary on this page is a private sample safari. Your vehicle and guide are reserved for your group.

Can I book a sample itinerary without changing it?

Yes. The itinerary remains the foundation of the trip. We only suggest a camp-location or route-flow adjustment when your actual dates make it clearly more sensible, and we explain the change and price before you confirm.

Why are several durations available for the same season?

A shorter route suits a firm travel window, while a longer route creates more time in the seasonal migration area and reduces the pressure to move on quickly.

Do safari prices include arrival and departure hotel nights?

The listed duration covers the safari days shown. Hotel nights before or after the safari are included only when written into your confirmed booking.

How far ahead should I reserve?

Seasonal camps in Ndutu and northern Serengeti can fill early. Reserving ahead gives you a stronger choice of camp location and room type.

Why book with Serengeti Wild Tours

Book with a local Tanzanian team that plans the details before you arrive

Your safari is planned here in Tanzania by a team that works with these parks, roads and seasonal camp areas. We check the route, camp position and practical flow for your dates before asking you to confirm, so the itinerary is built around how the journey works on the ground.

Local, licensed and easy to reach

Licensed Tanzanian Tour Operator and TANAPA / NCAA authorized operator. You are planning directly with a locally operated team, not passing your safari through an unknown chain of suppliers.

We check position, not only availability

For migration trips, where you sleep can affect how much useful safari time you have. We look at the camp location for your dates and discuss a comparable alternative before confirmation if the standard stay is not the right fit or is unavailable.

Clear booking steps and flexibility

A 10% deposit confirms the safari, with the balance due 10 days before travel. Bank transfer, Wise and card are available, and flexible rescheduling can be discussed around your travel dates.

Simple booking process

What happens after you enquire

Send your dates and group size

Tell us when you want to travel, how many people are coming and the comfort level you prefer.

We check the right camp position

We check seasonal camp availability and where the property sits for your route, not only whether a room is open.

We fine-tune the route and quote

If another overnight sequence or comparable camp makes better sense for your dates, we explain it before sending the final safari and price.

Confirm with the deposit

Once you are happy with the plan, the 10% deposit confirms the safari and we secure the agreed arrangements.

Compare safari value properly

Compare the complete safari, not only the headline price

Migration safari prices can look very different even when the number of days is the same. Before choosing, compare what those days actually contain.

Same group size

A private safari for two will normally cost more per person than the same private safari for six because the vehicle and some fixed fees are shared.

Same time in the migration area

Count the nights and useful game-drive time actually spent in Ndutu, Northern Serengeti or the Western Corridor. Camp position can matter as much as camp style.

Same inclusions

Check the private 4x4, guide, park and conservation fees, crater fees where applicable, full-board safari accommodation and transfers before comparing totals.
