Northern Tanzania Safari — Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival — Jambo Tanzania
Location: Arusha, Tanzania
Your Tanzanian adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A dedicated English-speaking guide meets you with a warm karibu — welcome in Swahili — and drives you through red-dust villages to Arusha. On clear evenings, Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit floats above the clouds on the horizon. Settle into your lodge and gather for an introductory dinner as your guide unfolds the journey ahead: open savannah, ancient baobabs, the endless Serengeti plains, and the world’s greatest intact volcanic caldera.
Day 2: Tarangire — Elephants & Ancient Baobabs
Location: Tarangire National Park
Three hours south-west of Arusha, Tarangire harbours one of East Africa’s greatest elephant concentrations — herds of 200 or more converge on the life-giving Tarangire River in the dry season. Your pop-up-roof Land Cruiser rolls slowly through groves of ancient baobab trees, some 1,000 years old and as wide as houses. Oryx, wildebeest, and the stately gerenuk graze beneath them while yellow-billed hornbills ride the thermals. Over 550 bird species call the park home including the rare ashy starling found nowhere else on Earth. A picnic lunch is served under a spreading acacia with the river murmuring below as elephant families wade across in unhurried procession.
Day 3: Serengeti — Enter the Endless Plains
Location: Central Serengeti, Tanzania
The word Serengeti derives from the Maasai serengit — the land that runs on forever — and as you crest the escarpment and gaze across the Seronera Valley for the first time, you understand exactly why. A vast ocean of golden grass broken by granite kopjes stretches to a horizon that seems impossibly distant. Cheetahs use the flat-topped rocks as watchtowers. A pride of twelve lions lazes in the midday heat, tails flicking. Your guide reads the grass and dust like a sailor reads the sea — a distant cloud signals wildebeest, a hunched vulture points to a kill. The afternoon game drive through the Seronera River network is prime big-cat territory: leopards draped over acacia branches, cheetah mothers teaching cubs to hunt.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater — World's Eighth Wonder
Location: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The drive east climbs to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater at 2,300 metres — the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. The view stops conversation: a 260 km² enclosed ecosystem 600 metres below, a natural amphitheatre holding approximately 25,000 animals that almost never need to leave. Black rhino graze near the Lerai Forest — one of Africa’s rarest sights. Enormous Ngorongoro bull elephants with tusks that brush the grass patrol the Mandusi swamp. Flamingoes tint the shallow alkaline lake pink. The crater holds the highest lion density on the continent, with coalitions of resident males that are magnificently maned and utterly unbothered by your vehicle.
Day 5: Departure — Kwaheri Tanzania
Location: Kilimanjaro International Airport
Your final morning in Tanzania. Enjoy a last breakfast as the African sun rises over the acacia trees and pack up the extraordinary memories you are carrying home — elephants at the river, lions in the crater, and stars over the Serengeti that you will never forget. A comfortable transfer takes you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight. We hope Tanzania has worked its magic on you — as it does on everyone who comes here. Kwaheri na safari njema — goodbye and safe travels.
